When an e-bike battery loses capacity, the cost of restoring it becomes the deciding factor. On average, professional reconditioning comes to less than a new original battery, and more than a cheap imported copy.

Here, transparently, is what makes up that price — from the cost of branded cells to the hours of bench testing — and why an abnormally low quote always hides a safety risk.

What is the average price?

The final price depends directly on the pack voltage (24 V, 36 V or 48 V) and the target capacity in amp-hours: the more energy the battery stores, the more cells are needed to build it.

    As things stand, a full reconditioning of a 10S3P pack — a common format on Xiaomi and compact e-bikes — with every cell replaced by new branded cells, comes to €190 in our workshop. Compare that with a new original battery: from €180 for old stock of doubtful chemistry, up to €250 for a fresh batch. Our price already includes careful dismantling of the old assembly, welding the new pack, and the mandatory control test.

  • 36 V batteries of standard or extended capacity (10 to 14 Ah): roughly €250 to €350. Our catalogue's Bosch PowerPack reconditioning, for instance, starts at €249 excl. VAT.

  • Maximum-capacity batteries (15 to 17 Ah and above): €350 to €450 and up, because of the high-discharge, high-density cells they require.

What makes up that price?

Many people imagine reconditioning means "swapping the batteries in a plastic case". It is in fact a technical process, made up of four cost items:

1. Certified branded cells (60 to 70 % of the cost)

Most of the price is the cells themselves. We use only certified grade A cells from the major manufacturers — Samsung, LG, Sanyo/Panasonic.

A 36 V, 14 Ah battery holds between 40 and 50 of them. A high-discharge cell with honest capacity and stable internal resistance cannot cost a few cents on the wholesale market.

2. Labour and assembly

Building a pack is precision work:

  • opening the old case without damaging it and removing the worn block;
  • diagnosing the original BMS board and checking its balancing circuits;
  • spot-welding the new cells with nickel tab of the right section, keeping the heat under control;
  • applying professional insulation — fish paper, Kapton, vibration-resistant sealant — to take the punishment of the road.

3. Cycling, bench tests and traceability

Before handing a battery back, we have to prove it is safe and matches what is claimed.

Unlike an improvised build, every pack assembled at NORDIX goes through a control cycle on an automated bench. We measure real capacity, record currents and verify that the BMS protections trigger.

One detail that matters: as soon as testing is finished, we recharge the battery to only 45–50 %. That storage charge level limits chemical ageing between leaving the workshop and entering service. The pack can then wait a long time without degrading before it goes onto the bike.

Why a reconditioning that is too cheap is dangerous

If you are offered a surprisingly low price, be wary. Physics does not do miracles: a very low price is always obtained at the expense of safety.

The NORDIX experience

We regularly receive batteries "restored cheaply" elsewhere, or home-built. What opening them reveals rarely leaves anyone indifferent: balancing wires held on with adhesive tape instead of soldered; nickel tab soldered with an ordinary iron, which overheats and kills the lithium on the spot; cells stuck together with office tape and free to move inside the case; no insulating fish paper between parallels, and no protective rings on the positive terminals.

Such an assembly can neither be serviced nor reworked. It is dangerous and can catch fire at the first impact. On top of that, whoever did the work usually operates with no legal framework: no liability, no insurance, no compensation possible in the event of a fire.

An investment worth looking at over time

When comparing prices, look also at the real life of the cells.

  • A low-end imported copy or a home-built pack at €150–200 often dies within 80 to 100 cycles. This happens even under normal temperature conditions: the raw material in those cells is simply very poor.

    Counterfeit or very low-grade cells can be spotted without any instrument — on a scale. Short of active material inside, they typically weigh 10 to 20 % less than a branded cell: 36 to 38 grams instead of the expected 46 to 48.

  • Reconditioning at €280–320 with branded cells, a 2-year warranty and a life of 500 to 800 cycles brings the real cost of ownership down to a minimum, while removing the fire risk and the unexpected failures.
